FYSP 140 - Religion, Politics, and Ethnicity in South Asian History4 SS, CD, WRi First Semester. This seminar analyzes the historical developments leading up to independence in South Asia, when religious and ethnic identities became prime politically mobilizing factors in many competing anti-colonial movements. The violent 1947 partition of South Asia led to the creation of the Islamic republics of Pakistan and Bangladesh; while officially secular, India has also moved recently towards religiously defined nationalism. Cross-cutting these religiously defined communities, however, are powerful ethnic identities, including regional nationalisms and "caste-based" parties. Prerequisites & Notes Enrollment Limit: 14.
