EAST 132 - Modern Japan, Nineteenth Century to Present3 SS, CD Second Semester. This course will begin with the dynamic changes occurring at all levels of Japanese society in the nineteenth century. We will then discuss the creation of Japan as a modern nation-state, its development as an empire-building power, and how these affected people’s lives (issues of gender, ethnicity, nationhood and culture). Other themes include how Japan coped with military defeat, how it regained its regional and global influence, and contemporary attempts to deal with its past.
