HIST 323 - Liberty and Power, Democracy and Slavery in Jacksonian America4 SS, CD, WR An exploration of the cultural dynamics, social relations, economic forces, and political structures that shaped the lives of ordinary Americans—African American, Euro-American and Native American; male and female; rich, middling, and poor; urban and rural; northern and southern, eastern and western; native-born and immigrant—between approximately 1820 and 1850. After reading Alexis de Tocqueville’s classic analysis of Jacksonian democracy, we will focus on recent case studies and current scholarly controversies.
