HIST 212 - Spain In the Age of Empire3 SS How can we explain the rise and fall of empires? In the 16 th and 17 th centuries Spain forged a global empire while simultaneously achieving a level of unprecedented artistic and intellectual creativity. But these accomplishments occurred against a backdrop of violence and repression that was directed at both colonized peoples and native “heretics.” This course explores the contradictions of imperial Spain, asking what made Spain a great power and what eventually destroyed that power.
