First Semester An introductory survey of Russian history from earliest times to the mid-19th c. Beginning with an overview of the Kievan Rus and the Mongol overlordship, we will explore the diverse influences of the steppe, Orthodox Christianity, and ‘the west”  on the nature of the Muscovite and Imperial Russian state,  the relationship between state and society, the formation of national and imperial identities, and dominant cultural values.
