HIST 101 - Medieval and Early Modern European History3 SS First Semester. An introductory level survey course extending from the fall of Rome through the "modernization" of medieval Europe during the 16 th and 17 th centuries. Topics will include: the political and religious order in the early Middle Ages, conflict between Church and Empire, the urbanization of Europe, the culture of the High Middle Ages, the growth of secular monarchies, the Black Death, the Italian Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution.
