POLT 261 - Islam and Politics3 SS New Course added 05/12/2006 Second Semester. This course explores the intersection of Islam and politics. It begins with a survey of the major 19
th-century intellectual traditions and political movements that inform Islamic activism today. The course then examines contentious issues relating to the political institutions governing Muslim societies (secular vs. Islamic states, military in politics, democracy) and to the politics of identity (pan-Islam and nationalism, Islam and religious tolerance, Muslim minorities, women and Islam).
