SOCI 431 - The Making and Unmaking of Communist Ideals3 SS Second Semester. This seminar explores the development of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe through historiography, literature, and film. The main part of the course is devoted to early revolutionary dilemmas, the relationship of intellectuals to the revolution in Soviet Russia and the West, and the rise of Stalinism. With novels by Gladkov, Silone, Koestler, Solzhenitsyn, and Milosz, and films by Beaty, Bertolucci, Mikhalkov, and Makavejev.
