AAST 208 - Slavery and Freedom in the Western Hemisphere3 SS, CD, WR First Semester. This course examines the emergence of the African diaspora in the Western Hemisphere from the 15th century onward. It focuses on the African historical background; the European contacts with West Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean; the rise of the Atlantic socio-economic and cultural complex; the development of New World economies and societies; the origins and organization of the slave trade and slavery; slave resistance, emancipation and the establishment of freedom.
