CHIN 209 - Chinese Cinema: A Tale of Two Genres3 HU, CD First Semester. This course studies contemporary Chinese cinema through the lenses of two important genres: Martial Arts and Romance. Directors from many Chinese-speaking regions continue to innovate in these forms, which have been enormously popular in international film festivals, art houses, and commercial theaters. Rich in aesthetic and political strata, these genres are valuable resources for studying the way cinema is shaping the presentation of Chinese culture on the global stage today. We will examine a dozen or more films to see how their stylistic experiments work with or against their political and allegorical elements, and compare and contrast the ways in which each director uses film as a medium for self-expression and social change.
