ARTS 353 - Cities, Architecture and Gardens in China and Japan

First Semester. An historical overview of the built environment in China and Japan.  Topics will include ritual and space, hierarchical systems in wooden construction, symbolism in architecture and urban planning, religions and building types, the world of the afterlife, aesthetics and design principles, regional styles as a reflection of geographical and cultural diversity, encountering the West, and modernity and cultural identity.
