HISP 420 - Gender and the Spanish Novella Tradition

First Semester. This course will focus on the concept of gender as represented in Spain’s novella tradition. We will consider selections from Cervantes’s classic Novelas ejemplares, Lope de Vega’s Novelas a Marcia Leonarda, and María de Zayas’s two fascinating collections of tales, the Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and the Desengaños amorosos. The course will also include preliminary readings (in English) from other European literary traditions, including the works of Giovanni Boccaccio, Matteo Bandello, and Marguerite de Navarre.  Taught in Spanish.
