Second Semester. Under Japanese colonial rule, Korean society underwent fundamental transformations that ultimately affected the histories of North and South Korea. More than just a period of political domination, the colonial period also represented a time when Koreans experienced economic, social and cultural changes.  This class examines these multiple transformations and developments and how Koreans responded to them. Topics include: Japanese imperialism; capitalist development; peasant movements; the “New Woman” movement; and “modern” forms of literature and art. Counts toward the History major.
