HIST 231 - European Urban History3 SS New Course Added 10/24/2006 Second Semester. This course traces the transformation of European cities, notably Paris, Berlin and London, in the 19th and 20th centuries. It examines urban planning, from Haussmannization to the English "Garden City" to contemporary protests over the perceived failure of mass suburban housing in Paris. It also explores the relationship between urban aesthetics and mass politics, and analyzes the growth of new mass cultural forms like the department store and the cinema.
