RELG 299 - Selected Topics in Approaches to the Study of Religion

This course provides an opportunity for religion majors to reflect on knowledge acquired in their coursework and develop skills relevant to independent research, writing projects, oral presentations, and graduate study. Consent of instructor required. Enrollment Limit: 15.

For First Semester, the specific topic is: Religious Studies as Cultural Criticism. We study the methodological challenges scholars face when assuming the role of cultural critic in order to address the complex intersections religion has with politics, science, economics, and popular culture. 

For Second Semester, the specific topic is: Religious Pluralism and Public Conversation. We examine the bases for conversation as religious traditions and their associated ethical practices come into contact with one another and with secularism in the public space.
