MENA 203 - Modern Arab Thought
A study of the origin of the Arab Revival Movement in the modern era, the quest of Arab intellectuals for modernity, and the nature of the development of Arab cultural identity. Important topics will include secularism, nationalism, sectarianism, and feminism, in particular the modern debate linking the liberation of women to modernism. Differences and socio-cultural misunderstandings between the Arab world and the developed West will be central to the course. Enrollment limit: 25. |
