A panoramic approach to names, texts and contexts, issues, and situations originating within a Latin American frame vis-à-vis Europe and the US. The signs “literature” and “culture” provide the excuse for a trip through time and geography: the “Latin” or “Hispanic” or “Spanish” portion of the American continent, mostly in the 20th century. Issues will include: imperialism / colonialism, nation / nationalism, (post-)modernity / “Third World,” the canon, culture wars and women’s writing, race / ethnicity, artistic movements, US-Latin American politics, violence, high vs. pop culture, foreignness vs. nativism, consumer network culture, etc. Taught in Spanish.
