This course introduces the politics of major South Asian countries -- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. It examines and compares processes and conflicts associated with colonialism, democratization, state-building and ethnic/religious/linguistic/class differences. It also focuses upon contemporary regional phenomena that have had major consequences at the international level such as nuclear proliferation, terrorism, and the growth of religious fundamentalism.
