India, and indian music, has captured the imagination of many people and artists outside the sub-continent. Exploring the musics of India in both their historical and contemporary contexts, this course pays particular attention to the transformation of the sounds and their meaning. A major focus of the course is the major classical traditions of India: Karnatak music of the south and Hindustani music of the north. We will closely examine their structures, tracing out important changes to the music of the north. The music of tribal proples and religious communities will also be considered, along with the place of music in contemporary Indian society and in the South Asian diaspora. Popular musics, including film music, dance music, and the latest fusions, will be examined in connection with their historical precedents.
