Writers and filmmakers were engaged in shaping "the other Germany" even before the formal establishment of the German Democratic Republic in 1949. Examining representative works from 1946 until 1989, we will explore the development of literary and film culture in East Germany and assess its influence since the opening of Cold War borders. This course will pay special attention to the many East German authors who visited Oberlin College as Writer-in-Residence.
