This course addresses documentary cinema from France, from the invention of the Lumiere cinematographe in 1896 to digital filmmaking at the beginning of the 21st century. As we study early city symphonies, ethnographic and anthropological films, war documentaries, cinema-verite, and biographical and advocacy films, we will investigate the structures, techniques, and ideologies that identify these practices as non-fictional, and wrestle with claims of truth and objectivity.
