ENGL 310 - Early Medieval Literature: From Virgil to DanteThis course may also count for the major in (consult the program or department major requirements) : Comparative Literature Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4HU, WINT This course considers the rise of European literatures in the post-Roman world. Topics will include the Christian rejection of classical learning and literature in the late-antique period, the clash of monastic and heroic ideals in Germanic epic, and the rise of flamboyantly secular, love-oriented literary cultures in French-speaking courts. We will conclude with the first part of Dante's Divine Comedy and its ambitious new claims for vernacular poetry. All texts in English translation. Pre-1700. Enrollment Limit: 25 Instructor: J.
