Designed as a "compendium of beasts," this course provides a panorama of Latin American literature (and some film) from the late nineteenth century to the present by focusing on representations of animals and imaginary creatures, metamorphosis and anthropomorphism, zoomorphic metaphors, and mythological beings. The texts, by authors including Darío, Bombal, Borges, Ribeyro, Glantz, Levrero, and Aira, as well as filmmakers like Lucía Puenzo, range from the traditional moral fable to the ambiguous postmodern narrative. Taught in Spanish.
