This course will serve as an introduction to the history and theory of translation. Students will examine issues associated with the translatability of the original, the fidelity of the translated text, and the politics of translation. Based on the peculiarities of the original and target languages, we will scrutinize the linguistic, stylistic, and cultural choices made by translators. The course will focus on representative texts from Goethe, Benjamin, and Nabokov to Derrida, Spivak, and Apter.

Prerequisites: CMPL 200, or any creative writing or foreign language course at any level, or knowledge of a foreign language, or consent of the instructor.
