In this course we will read significant works in Japanese literature from the earliest times to the end of the Muromachi period (late 16th century). The readings will be from a number of genres -- such as mythic and historical writing, poetry, tales, essays, and drama. When appropriate, readings will be supplemented by videos of performances or modern adaptations. Field trip(s) required.
