This course examines the history of Jewish, Muslim and Christian relations in the Middle Ages and the ways in which these groups, in violence and peace, shaped their own and each other?s identities for centuries to come. In light of contemporary theories about orthodoxy and heterodoxy and the nature of difference, we will analyze two pivotal encounters, the Crusades and the Christian Reconquista of Spain and trace their disturbing legacy in a post 9/11 world.
