Columbus' 1492 voyage marks the encounter between two continents, from which a "New World" emerged. This course looks at the early writings by Spaniards and "Americans" in the Spanish colonies and traces the development of regional and national literatures in the centuries that followed. Texts (and films about the period) include narratives from the conquest, writings by colonial intellectuals, examples of literature criollista, polemical essays by rebels and statesmen, and works by post-independence writers. Taught in Spanish.
