RUSS 226 - Synaesthetic Utopias

Semester Offered: Second Semester
Full Course
Credits: 4 credits
Attribute: 4HU, CD

An introduction to Russian Modernism across the arts through the creative experience of synaesthesia: the blending of sensory modalities. Mystically and technologically enhanced, the mixed senses inspired the innovations of Russia's avant-garde poets, composers, and visual artists, as they promised the fulfillment of the Russian aesthetic, erotic, and social utopias of transfiguration and revolution. The course examines works by Bely, Kandinsky, Khlebnikov, Mayakovsky, Scriabin, Stravinsky, and Zamyatin in their Western European context. In English.
