RUSS 411 - Special Topics: Contemporary Russian Literature

This course focuses on shorter Russian texts written after 1991. Students will deepen their knowledge of Russian style and language by analyzing contemporary works while discussing the disintegration of the Soviet Union as it affected Russian everyday life. We will examine Russian postmodernism with its emphasis on authorial reflexivity, intellectualism, and the fantastic; the development of women's prose; and the constitution of middle literature. Authors may include Akunin, Pelevin, Petrushevskaya, Tolstaya, Ulitskaya, and Shishkin.
