Participants in this course will explore the various ways that musical experience generates emotional responses. Perspectives include those of listeners, performers, and composers. Additional topics include the relationship between emotion, cognition, gender, and aesthetics. Coursework involves regular application of readings and class discussions to music from around the globe, old and new, with Western classical and vernacular music at the center, and additional music studied both in its own right and in comparison with Western practices. Non-music majors with at least junior standing are welcome. Contact the instructor for more information.
