This course explores Russian fairy tales, dreams, futuristic utopias, and interplanetary voyages that informed the genre of Russian science fiction. We will examine how supernatural and utopian visions merged with social and scientific ideas to critique society or glorify technological progress. Works may include early fantasy and sci-fi texts by Pushkin, Gogol, Odoevsky, and Dostoevsky; Soviet dystopias by Zamiatin and Bulgakov; sci-fi classics by Alexei Tolstoy and the Strugatsky brothers; and Tarkovsky's filmic masterpieces.
