Examines the ethics of war, including the reasons for waging war and for fighting with restraint, as formulated by ethical traditions in Islamic societies from the early Middle Ages to modern times. Through a critical reading of texts written from multiple genres and cultural traditions, this seminar will examine a broad spectrum of theoretical approaches and practical attitudes regarding war ethics, widened further by comparative ethical analyses across Muslim and Western cultural perspectives.
