This course will survey the history of the American musical from its roots in 19th century performance traditions (minstrels shows, burlesque, vaudeville, operetta, revue and follies) to the present. We will cover basic musical theatre terminology, key periods in the development of the form, major composers and lyricists, and the role of the creative team: producer, composer, lyricist, bookwriter, director, choreographer, designers, orchestrators and principal actors.
