This course observes Elizabethan minds at work on themselves, their past, and the wider world they were beginning to encounter. We will investigate: the referential and expressive range of 16th- and 17th-century English; the political context and conceptual backgrounds of Elizabethan writing; major changes in English society, language and thought; the consequences of English expansion for peoples encountered or colonized. British, Pre-1700. Enrollment Limit: 25. Instructor: M. Booth Prerequisites & Notes Prerequisite: Two 200-level courses, including at least one Gateway course; or three 200-level courses.
