Beginning with the impact of World War II on Soviet society, this course explores the domestic consequences of Stalinism and the early Cold War; the reform initiatives of Khrushchev; the ‘stagnation’ of the Brezhnev period; Gorbachev’s program of glasnost and perestroika; the dramatic collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of the Yeltsin regime; and the Putin presidency.
