A focused survey of European and American art from circa 1785 to circa 1906. The course will begin with the resurgence of neoclassicism in the late eighteenth century and then consider various artistic responses – including Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism – to traditional academic principles and practices. Works of art, critical debates, and institutional developments will be discussed in relationship to economic and technological modernization, social transformation, and political revolution.
