Ever since Plato, one branch of philosophy has scorned literary writing as too ornamental or irrational while another has admired its narrative, descriptive, and figural powers. Creative writers have similarly treated philosophers as inferior or superior ‘others.’ Why does each need the other as a necessary foil? This course surveys key positions, interpretations, and constructions on both sides of this contested relationship and emphasizes contemporary possibilities for collaboration and conversation.
