This course focuses on the development of the novel in the 18th- and 19th-century Americas. We will attend to relations of literary, aesthetic, and political influence between Europe and the Americas. While some of our texts have been studied for decades, we will also read several novels recently recovered through archival work. Of particular interest will be these novels’ adaptations of earlier narratives of seduction and romance to political and social conditions in the Americas. American, Diversity, 1700-1900.
