What does the world look like from an artist’s studio? This course investigates the social construction of the studio in China and Japan, examining issues of self-fashioning, amateurism vs. professionalism, market dynamics, authenticity and master-student relations. From the founding myth of the artist in unmediated contemplation of nature to the emergence of the artist as entrepreneur, we will consider how the notion of the world as studio became a vision of the studio as world.
