APST 760 - Old Time Ensemble

This course focuses on a set of American folk traditions known collectively as “Old Time” music. Throughout the semester, we’ll become familiar with multiple styles of vocal and string band repertoire, learning by ear and emphasizing ensemble playing/singing.

No previous experience is necessary. You may choose to concentrate on either vocal or instrumental performance, or to combine both. Bring your fiddles (of any size—violins, violas, cellos, double basses are all welcome), guitars, banjos, mandolins, or accordions; other instruments are negotiable as well, and a limited number of washboards and spoons will be available to borrow.
