ARTS 387 - Visual Culture of the Muslim World Semester Offered: First Semester Credits (Range): 3 hours Attribute: 3HU, CD This course will focus on the relationship between the Muslim faith and Islamic visual cultures as manifested in painting, calligraphy, architecture, photography, performance arts, and film. Using a thematic approach, we will investigate the visual codes and expressions of pre-modern and contemporary Muslims from South Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa. Themes of the course will include aniconism, representations of the divine, materiality, identity, memory, and displacement. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: E.
