ARTS 387 - Visual Culture of the Muslim World

This course will focus on the relationship between the Muslim faith and Islamic visual cultures as manifested in painting, calligraphy, architecture, photography, performance arts, and film. Using a thematic approach, we will investigate the visual codes and expressions of pre-modern and contemporary Muslims from South Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa. Themes of the course will include aniconism, representations of the divine, materiality, identity, memory, and displacement.
