This seminar will examine the changing and often contradictory relations between Italy and the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Arab civilizations of the eastern Mediterranean in the early modern period and explore the impact of these cultural encounters on Renaissance art and architecture. While we will focus on the reception of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Arab art and culture in Italy, classes will also be devoted to artistic production in Constantinople and Italian colonies in the Mediterranean.
