JAZZ 380 - Special Topic: Introduction to the Neumann Jazz Collection Next Offered: [TBD] Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 2 Hours Attribute: CNDP/DDHU This course – a combination of lectures, discussions, and student presentations – will serve as an introduction to the methods and current state of jazz research through engagement with the James R. and Susan Neumann Jazz Collection and other jazz-focused special collections in the Conservatory Library. Topics will include: an overview of the holdings of prominent jazz archives from across the U.S., use of oral histories in jazz research, legal and technical issues in audio preservation, recordings as the musical “Scores” for improvised jazz, the role of periodicals in jazz historiography, the sociology of record collectors, and the future of jazz archives.
