ARTS 374 - Art in France and Britain of the Long 19th Century Semester Offered: Second Semester Credits (Range): 3 hours Attribute: 3HU, WR This course is a focused survey of art in Europe from David’s monumental history painting, Oath of the Horatii, 1784, to Cezanne’s Bathers, exhibited in 1906. Along the way, we will explore a range of artistic responses, including Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Aestheticism, and Impressionism, to a changing social world marked by technology, revolution, and social transformation. The course serves as an introduction to the avant-garde in Europe as we consider responses to academic practices. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: S.
