Using works on display at the Allen Memorial Art Museum, students will explore how the passage of time can physically change art’s materials and technologies, subvert their meaning and raise the specter of obsolescence. We will look at the ethical issues faced by professionals trying to balance the artwork’s physical presence, the artist’s intended meaning and the museum’s responsibility to its collection and to the viewer.
