This course traces the major voices in Russian lyric poetry from the eighteenth century to the present. While engaging with the concepts of music, musicality, and the soul, we will explore the language of emotions and the creation of lyric subjectivity in Russian poetry. Discussions will focus on the musicality of poetry (versification, imagery, philosophy) and on the settings of Russian poems to music (romances, bard songs). The course entails a translation project.
