What sociopolitical and aesthetic commitments distinguish African American writers born during or after the Civil Rights and Black Power movements from their predecessors? In what ways do these distinctions reflect shifting notions of race, gender, and class? What are the critical merits and drawbacks of terms such as “post-soul” and “hip hop generation”? This multi-genre course pursues these questions by examining the work of Kevin Young, Suzan-Lori Parks, Natasha Trethewey, and Colson Whitehead, among others. American, Diversity, Post-1900.
