This course will cover literary depictions of Cyrus the Great, the Persian hero and founder of the long-lived Achaemenid dynasty. We will translate large sections of the Cyropaedia, Xenophon’s account of Cyrus’ life and education, and compare them to Herodotus’ account, which we will read in translation. We will also cover portions of the Anabasis, Xenophon’s account of the only Greek military expedition into Persian territory. Secondary readings will examine the rise and fall of the Persian empire.
