HIST 344 - Race, Gender, Uncle Tom’s Cabin Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4SS, CD, WADV
We will explore Uncle Tom’s Cabin and its visual/textual ‘archive’ to ask: what contexts shaped the creation of the text? In what forms did it circulate both in its own time and beyond? How do we understand UTC’s designated cultural work, and the impact of revisions, from the Civil War to the present, particularly with respect to race, gender and political movements? Course will include close textual analysis, historical work, sustained writing. Field trips required. Enrollment Limit: 25 Instructor: C. Lasser, S.
