A study of selected works, considered in relation to the musical and intellectual traditions of which Mahler was a part. The development of his musical style, as found in some of the songs and symphonies, and Das Lied von der Erde. Introduction to the problem of “extramusical” connotations: literary, religious, philosophical, and psychological.
